Speak Commands
nüvi 855 not only tells you where to turn but listens to your spoken commands. With nüvi's innovative speech recognition, you safely control nüvi's interface with your voice--allowing you to keep both hands on the wheel. Simply press the button on the remote (which attaches to the steering wheel) to activate speech recognition and begin speaking menu options. nüvi even recognizes shortcut phrases for popular functions. Tell nüvi "Find Address" and speak an address to start navigating.

Navigate With Ease
nüvi 855 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps and millions of points of interest (POIs) such as hotels, restaurants, fuel stations, ATMs and more. Speak a menu option or touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2-D or 3-D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. It even announces the name of exits and streets so you never have to take your eyes off the road. In addition, nüvi 855 accepts custom points of interest, such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.

I would have been totally happy had not the description of the item misled me. Based upon what I read (and interpreted), I expected to receive a new item -- but instead got a rebuilt. (The description used by Amazon now would not be misleading -- what I read was).

The Garmin GPS (purchased to replace an earlier one, stolen) was my first purchase from Amazon. Delivery time, price, and operation of the gadget all met my expectations -- except that it was "refurbished" instead of new.Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition

We have an older version of this (760) so the transition to the new one was very easy. Love the lane assist view however it is not available in most area's, so far only major interstate junctions. Love the options it has, the voice recognition works pretty well given the windows are up and the radio is off. Would buy this product again. Jeff [...] -- customer review

Good speech recognition. I was surprised at the accuracy of speech recognition. Just tell it where to go, and it hasn't made an error yet...! A handy feature when you're on the road. I bought it for that sole reason..and I'd buy it again...and it's the refurbished unit at that. The refurbed unit + 4 yr ext'd warranty is cheaper than new...! Very good accuracy.

[...] Great little unit May 24, 2010

I got it one day before my grand canyon trip - It really helped a lot because my Iphone .... AT&T .... nearly no reception at all. The unit is fast accurate and the FM transmitter is doing an great job - including music.
The charging cradle was defect - so I end up using the batery and charged the unit via USB. Garmin was reacting imediatly and send me an replacement.
I would prefer to be able to preare tours on the computer and upload them to the unit - I am not that of a fan with the screen keyboard but this is the case with all of them if I remember.
I am using Gramins for flying, Geotagging, Geocashing and n the road - It is a reliable company.
